I am an applied mathematician, and I joined the faculty of the Statistics Department at University of Chicago in January 2016,
where I contribute to the Computational and Applied Mathematics Initiative
(CAMI). Before coming here, I was a professor in the Department of Engineering Sciences and Applied Mathematics at Northwestern University for more than 20 years.
Activities:
- December, 2016:
PhD Program in Computational and Applied Mathematics: The newly-established Committee on Computational and Applied Mathematics at the University of Chicago is now accepting applications for fall 2017.
- November, 2016:
Graduate Student Karna Gowda is awarded a
McDonnell Foundation Postdoctoral Fellowship in Complex Systems to conduct research on "Evolving communities: how adaptation shapes microbial interactions", a future move from dryland ecology to microbial ecology.
- 1952-2006: A SLOW MARCH THROUGH THE DESERT: Graduate Student Karna Gowda wins fourth place in the 2016 Northwestern Scientific Images Contest for artwork made from our research.
- October 29-30, 2016:
AMS Sectional Meeting,
Special Session on Modeling and Predicting the Atmosphere, Oceans, and Climate, in Minneapolis.
- September 29, 2016:
Mathematics and Climate Research Network Annual Meeting, prior to SIAM Conference on Mathematics of Planet Earth meeting, in Philadelphia.
- September 4-9, 2016:
Critical Transition in Complex Systems Workshop on Mathematical Theory and Applications, in Kulhuse, Denmark.
- July 18-August 4, 2016:
IMA Summer Graduate Program on Mathematics and Climate: Organized by Chris Jones, Dick McGehee, Erik Van Vleck and me at the University of Kansas.
- July 11-July 15, 2016:
SIAM Annual Meeting Boston: Two years (!!) in the planning with my meeting co-chair, David Gleich. Many of the plenary talks were recorded; check them out here.
- June 12-July 31, 2016:
Grad student Karna Gowda attends the Woods Hole MBL physiology course on Modern Cell Biology.
- May 31-July 29, 2016: Summer undergraduate research project with Chad Topaz (Macalester College) and Andy Bernoff (Harvey Mudd College), and their amazing undergrads, joined by my collaborator Sarah Iams, and my Northwestern applied math PhD students, Karna Gowda and Yuxin Chen, launched in St. Paul, MN.
- January 1-July 9, 2016: I move to University of Chicago Statistics Department and take my time about launching a new webpage, and here it is "under construction".
