Course Structure:
Textbook: R. Haberman, "Applied Partial Differential
Equations; 4th Edition".
Syllabus:
Before the break:
Introduction to PDE's. Solutions by the method of separation of
variables. Fourier Series. Laplace and wave equation. Sturm Liouville
eigenvalue problem and variational formulations.
Textbook: Chapters 1-5 roughly.
After the break:
Initial value problems in 2D and
3D. Non-homogeneous PDE's and Green's functions. If time permits:
First-order equations and the method of characteristics.
Textbook: Chapters 7-9 and possibly 12.
Grading:
There will be a homework due every Thursday and a (take-home) quiz
due every other Thursday. There will be one midterm.
Your final course grade will be determined by:
Quizzes and Homeworks: 30% altogether;
Midterm Exam: 30%;
Final Exam: 40%
