Winter 2008: Metagenomics and population genetics
In this course we will focus on the biological, statistical, and computational challenges involved in the analysis of metagenomic data. In metagenomics and population genetics, the goal is to understand the patterns of variation in genomes within species and between related species. New sequencing technologies allow us to gather data on unexplored populations, but require new methods of analysis. We will look at the connections between these problems and more established fields such as phylogenetics, sequence assembly, and population genetics.
Topics will be chosen from recent papers from the literature; some of these papers will be presented by seminar participants.
