The Department's David Wallace Award for Applied Statistics is given yearly to graduate students working on applications of statistics in scientific domains. The award includes a supplement to the student's summer support. This year, the award was given to Yuxin Zou for her research on genetic fine mapping and on multivariate association analysis with no natural baseline. This award was established thanks to a generous donation by Statistics alumnus David Frohardt-Lane (MS, 2000).

Congratulations to PhD students Kushal Dey and Lei Sun who, along with Lauren M. Jackson (PhD candidate in English), have been selected to receive a Graduate Collaboration Grant for their project "Social Movement and Media Narrative: Statistical and Machine Learning Analysis of Socio-political News Coverage."  Faculty advisors on this project are Profs. Michael Dawson (Political Science) and Peter McCullagh (Statistics).  This grant is part of the Arts, Science + Culture Initiative.

Xiang Zhu's work on enrichment analysis of genome-wide association summary statistics has won an ASA student paper award. Xiang is advised by Prof. Matthew Stephens and will present this paper at the 2017 Joint Statistical Meeting in Baltimore. This year's award was given to Christopher McKennan for his work on analysis of asthma genetics and genomics datasets and to Wanting Xu for her work on statistical analysis of high-frequency voltage measurements from an electrical circuit exhibiting chaotic behavior. This award was established thanks to a generous donation by Statistics alumnus, David Frohardt-Lane (MS, 2000).

Andy Poppick's work on evolving climate variability has won an ASA student paper award. Andy is co-advised by Profs. Michael Stein (Statistics) and Liz Moyer (Geophysical Sciences) and will present his paper at the 2016 Joint Statistical Meeting in Chicago; a preprint is available here. Andy's research is supported by U. Chicago's Center for Robust Decision-making on Climate and Energy Policy (RDCEP) and by STATMOS, the Research Network for Statistical Methods for Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences.
