Policy Concerning Master's Degree Registration
Registration for courses
A graduate student registered elsewhere in the University may take any course offered by the Department of Statistics provided that the student satisfies the prerequisites and registers for the course. However, certain courses do have limitations on registration. Consent of the instructor is required in all cases.
Masters degree registration
A graduate student registered elsewhere in the University who wishes to take a Masters degree in Statistics must apply in writing. Students should consult the University guidelines concerning second Master's degrees. In particular, the second Master's program should form a coherent intellectual whole with the primary program. Thus, a graduate student registered in the Biological Sciences Division, or elsewhere in the Physical Sciences Division, will not ordinarily be admitted into the finance track of the Master's program. Also, according to University regulations, the program must be approved in writing before half of the course requirements for the second degree have been undertaken.
Historically, the Department has admitted to the Masters degree program qualified research students registered for a Ph.D. in methodology or quantitative research in the Social Sciences Division. We will continue that policy. An academically qualified research student will ordinarily be accepted into the Masters program in Statistics only if a compelling case is made on the grounds of research methodology connected with the student's Ph.D. research.
Professional Masters students registered elsewhere in the University will not ordinarily be admitted into the Masters program in Statistics. They may, of course, apply to the Statistics program with the intent of starting after completion of the first Masters degree.
